Right on Jake… the restrictions do serve a purpose… I mean we don’t want cars on blocks in our tiny front lawns nor do we want crazy paint schemes or exotic landscaping – no moats please – but that should allow ample room for the average person to operate. The trouble comes when those in charge begin to take themselves and their role too serious… that is what I perceive as our problem.

Nice article, Dave! And I sympathize with you, too!

Although, my experience is that no two HOAs are alike. Some are very draconian and others are very laissez faire. My current HOA is pretty decent, although their priorities are screwed up sometimes.

For example, one year I got a notice to green-up my lawn three days after a particularly harsh heat wave decimated it. Meanwhile, my neighbor had a broken window that had gone unfixed for months with zero repercussions. Go figure.

That’s crazy! I’ve never lived in a neighborhood with restrictions, but do know some that do. I can see “to a point” how it would be a benefit… but just the things you talked about would be a huge turn off to me!!
