“Who am I? Why am I here?”
– Admiral James Stockdale
The above line was received with laughter and applause when uttered by Admiral Stockdale prior to the 1992 Vice Presidential debate. I’ve tried the line a time or two in client meetings or presentations and it has always fallen flat for me. In fact, once upon having to explain the reference I had a former client, one with whom I still have a good relationship, jokingly call me a “dork”. Though, I must say, I’ve been called worse.
Nonetheless, the line seems to apply today. The blogosphere is ripe with Finance, Improvement, and Self Maintenance blogs, many with large established audiences and a long history of sharing quality information to the masses. And so here I stand, figuratively, amongst this segment’s Al Gore’s and Dan Quayle’s asking… who am I and why am I here?
Well, my name is Dave Ozment, I’m a personal finance nerd and I’m here to share, learn, engage, and grow.
Share – I have an undergraduate degree in Corporate Finance and an MBA in Strategic Management. I have over 12 years experience with a leading Management/IT/Strategy Consultancy and have been exposed to a number of dynamic work environments. And, as have many folks, I’ve made good/bad and smart/dumb decisions related to my money along the way. I believe/hope that I can add an entertaining and perhaps fresh voice and perspective to this already vibrant forum.
Learn – I’ve always believed that writing is a fascinating and introspective activity. It is a muscle I’ve frequently allowed to atrophy. I expect my creativity and self awareness will grow around this new undertaking and that says nothing of the content knowledge I expect to gain… besides, if you’re reading this on the web then I’ve already learned how to get this plane off the ground… won’t you help me keep it aloft?
Engage – I hope to meet, interact, and get to know (even if virtually) those of you reading my materials. A friend of mine uses the term “collective brain” when talking about the exchange of ideas. I think that’s an appropriate term for what I mean when I say I want to engage folks around ideas – theirs and mine.
Grow – Jimmy Valvano in his last great address before succumbing to cancer in 1993 said “…If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special.” Borrowing from that idea, if I can Share with you, Learn from you, and Engage with you there’s no doubt in my mind that I’ll also Grow with you.
Thanks for stopping, reading, and clicking. I hope that you’ll continue to do so – perhaps even subscribing to my feeds. Meanwhile, I invite your comments sharing your thoughts and ideas.
