Unfortunately many people still don't understand the process or the best way to utilize a bankruptcy to help them regain financial stability. And with over 1.5M bankruptcies declared in 2010 alone it's not surprising that many of them are done incorrectly

You are very right. It is ridiculous to reaffirm that level of debt. I personally think that there can be times when the reaffirmation of debt makes financial sense, such as when maintaining the debt would be cheaper than replacing a necessary asset (such as your only car), but those are the rare exceptions. In most cases, reaffirmation does not make sense. If you are going to file, get a fresh start.

Bankruptcy is a horrible process and as you rightly decide the nuclear option! I find it furstrating when it is promoted as a first tool to dealing with debt without the consequences being adequately discussed with those who have to face it. It should never be a first option but always a last resort

You are so right... money problems are often a sympton rather than the issue, therefore when the slate is wiped clean the situation will continue to skew to the negative because the issue was not really addressed. Get to work addressing your issues and increasing your knowledge set and you'll power through the situation. I hope some of the information here can help and feel free to drop me a line or post another comment somewhere if there's something I can help with or a topic you'd like for me to address.

Thanks and good luck!

I wish I had proper guidance prior to my bankruptcy. I was 2/3 the way through when I realized I didnt need to be in bankruptcy (Chapter 13). I think I am in worse shape now coming out of the bankruptcy. I see now 5 years later ( I was just discharged last week) that I have other issues that need to be addressed by education and counseling and not by declaring bankruptcy.
