Goal Setting – Family Goals (part 7)
April 10, 2009 by: Dave Ozment
This is the seventh installment in my Goal Setting series. In this article we will demonstrate the model set forth in the first episode for Family Goals.
As a recap: You will recall that I am a firm believer in establishing goals across 8 unique facets of my life – Spiritual, Financial, Career, Personal Development, Physical, Family, Social, and Household. I name my approach after a 1998 Tom Wolfe novel, a Man in Full – because I like the imagery evoked by the title.
Our immediate family should be amongst our greatest treasures. The return on having a plan to maintain those relationships is well worth the effort.
While these examples borrow from my own goals, these are genericized for demonstration purposes.
Man in Full – Success personified in this category resembles:
· Proud Father
· Perfect Marriage
5 Year Goals – Over this timeframe I will make the following strides towards actualizing my vision
· (still) In Love with my wife
· Children
1 Year Goals – This year I will make the following strides towards success
· Open and shared goals with wife
· Read 2 Family/Marriage Books
· Schedule/Execute Vacation with wife
1 Month Goals – Monthly activity schedules may resemble
· Monthly Date Nights with wife
· Complete Books June/December
· Weekend motorcycle trip with Dad (June or July)
Today – I will do something today that bends my behavior towards my vision
· Say ‘I Love You’
· Call someone
· Clean the house
Just as Rome was not built in day and the longest journey begins with a single step, the power in this model is in how it causes us to consider our end product each day. In this way we do not simply arrive at our destination as much as we invent habits and patterns that over time reveal our vision through us.

Going on 19 years and still happily married, let me share a secret or two:
Give her space. Telling her not to see friends so often, even male friends, will have negative impact.
Talk about your feelings. Tell her how you feel on a daily basis. If you feel jalous say it. If you feel sad, tell her, if you feel full of joy, tell her.
Talk about your hopes and dreams. She might actually share them, maybe over time. And she could be the one to help you reach your goals.
This advice has helped our marriage.
Fanstastic advice! I’ve learned some of these the hard way, I’ve stumbled into others, and I’ll file some away for the future.
Thanks for sharing!
Dave

Thanks man, I appreciate that… families are quite unique but I value mine. As my wife and I get ready to start a family I hope we can impart these values to our future children.
Happy Easter to you too!
